Who We Are
Freedom Grow is a grassroots, volunteer-driven 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to supporting cannabis prisoners and their families. Founded in 2015 by Stephanie Landa, Freedom Grow emerged from a shared passion for justice, freedom, and dignity for those affected by cannabis prohibition. Many of us have been incarcerated or have loved ones who have suffered the injustices of prohibition firsthand. Our mission is simple yet powerful: to “Bring Light to Dark Cells” by providing direct support to those still behind bars and advocating for their freedom.
Our Roots and Evolution
Our journey began with Stephanie Landa’s founding of the Landa Prison Outreach Program (LPOP), a grassroots initiative dedicated to supporting cannabis prisoners. Stephanie was compelled to start advocating for cannabis prisoners because she served 5 years in prison for cannabis. Then, Stephanie later joined The Human Solution International, where she and Kristin Flor served as board members—Kristin as Vice President. When Kristin joined The Human Solution, she was heartbroken over the devastating loss of her father, who died in prison for medical cannabis, while her mother also served time for cannabis-related charges. Seeking support, Kristin quickly took a leadership role, channeling her grief into action and advocacy.
Together with other dedicated advocates like Eugene Fischer, they held signs for Randy Lanier during his incarceration, pushing for his freedom. When Randy was released in 2014 after serving 27 years of a life sentence for cannabis, our advocacy work continued.
LPOP evolved into Freedom Grow in 2015, carrying forward the mission of supporting cannabis prisoners. As Freedom Grow took root on the West Coast, Randy’s dedication and leadership helped expand our reach to the East Coast, strengthening our nationwide impact.
Our Journey for Justice
Our advocacy stretches beyond prison walls and into communities across the country. Stacey Theis, a passionate advocate and member of our honorary board, played an instrumental role in our earlier days, spreading awareness through her iconic Cannabus. During the original Journey for Justice, Stacey stood alongside us as part of The Human Solution International and later served as a board member of Freedom Grow.
Our Growing Family
Freedom Grow is built on resilience, unity, and the dedication of an incredible team of volunteers. Our family includes:
- Mitzi Wall, whose son Jonathan is currently serving time for a nonviolent cannabis offense. Mitzi joined us as the Secretary of the Board and Wish Coordinator, helping grant special wishes to prisoners and their families.
- Tracie Gloor, whose son Lance was incarcerated for cannabis, serves as our Commissary Coordinator. Tracie manages our commissary program and birthday program, ensuring prisoners receive funds and heartfelt cards to remind them they are not forgotten.
- Kristi Kem, a financial expert from Dope CFO, volunteers as our CFO. Kristi’s financial expertise helps keep Freedom Grow’s operations transparent and sustainable.
- The Beard Brothers, who have faced raids and legal challenges, recently joined us, bringing their passion for justice and their commitment to ending cannabis prohibition.
- Dedicated Volunteers: Our team is strengthened by an incredible group of volunteers, many of whom have experienced incarceration for cannabis themselves. They contribute their time and talents to support every aspect of our mission, from managing our website and creating graphics to maintaining our outreach list, assisting with clemency efforts, fundraising, prison outreach, organizing events, leading letter campaigns, writing articles, and so much more. Many of these dedicated individuals also serve as advisory board members. Freedom Grow’s success would not be possible without the unwavering commitment of these amazing people who selflessly give their time to keep our organization thriving.
Together, with the mantra “One Team, One Dream,” we work tirelessly to support prisoners, advocate for reform, and ensure families stay connected despite the hardships of incarceration.

What We Do
At Freedom Grow, we believe that no one should be incarcerated for a plant. Our core outreach falls under the Wish Program, a comprehensive initiative designed to support cannabis prisoners and their families. Through this program, we provide:
Comprehensive Commissary Support:
We ensure cannabis prisoners can access basic necessities like food, toiletries, and communication with loved ones. This support includes emergency commissary funds for everyone on our list and a rotating commissary program that provides regular support to those who aren’t being helped by other organizations.
Strengthening Family Bonds:
The Wish Program allows prisoners to send thoughtful gifts to their loved ones—like shoes for a child’s birthday, a robe for a mother on Mother’s Day, or chocolates for a spouse on Valentine’s Day. These gifts help prisoners stay connected with their families and participate in important milestones, despite the barriers of incarceration.
Stationery Program for Children:
To foster communication between incarcerated parents and their children, we provide stationery supplies—including pens, paper, and stamps. This encourages letter writing and helps maintain a tangible connection beyond phone calls and emails.
Holiday and School Drives:
Our Wish Program hosts annual drives to support the children of cannabis prisoners. The Holiday Drive includes sending gift cards, commissary funds, and special gifts to families during the holiday season. Our School Drive provides essential school supplies, helping children succeed academically and easing the financial burden on families.
Educational Support through Books and Magazines:
We supply books and magazines to help prisoners stay educated, entertained, and connected to the outside world. This initiative encourages growth, learning, and meaningful engagement during incarceration.
Court Support and Advocacy Campaigns:
We offer court support to individuals facing cannabis-related charges by organizing letter drives for judges and assisting with advocacy campaigns. We also run ongoing letter campaigns at events, collecting signatures to send to judges, the President, and the Pardon’s Office. Over the years, we’ve sent more than 25,000 letters advocating for clemency.
Newsletters: Connection from the Heart:
Freedom Grow’s newsletters are lovingly handmade by our Executive Director, Kristin Flor, who pours her heart into every edition. These newsletters go beyond updates—they are lifelines, providing prisoners with a sense of community, connection, and hope. Each newsletter is crafted with care, ensuring prisoners feel remembered and supported.
Clemency Support:
We actively support cannabis prisoners seeking clemency by submitting letters of support from prisoners, their families, and advocates to the Pardon’s Office. With permission, we help strengthen existing applications and assist new applicants in filing for clemency, amplifying their voices and their calls for freedom.
Reentry Support:
Our reentry program provides funds for essential resources like bus passes, cell phones, and clothing to help individuals transition back into society after prison. While we are working to secure more funding to expand this program, we remain dedicated to supporting successful reentry for those we serve.
Birthday Recognition:
We ensure that every cannabis prisoner on our outreach list feels remembered on their special day by sending a personalized birthday card and commissary money annually. This heartfelt gesture reminds them that they are not forgotten, bringing light and joy even in the darkest of places.
Why We Need Your Support
Freedom Grow was here before many other organizations, and we remain steadfast in our mission. We know the struggles of prohibition firsthand, and our grassroots approach ensures that we are deeply connected to the people we serve. But we can’t do it alone. To sustain and expand our outreach, we need your support. Your donations help us grant wishes, bring hope to dark cells, and fight for a world where no one is imprisoned for cannabis.
