FREEDOM ISN’T CHEAP

This past week I received a letter from one of my supporters: “Stay positive, we are fighting for your freedom. We’re trying to change the harsh marijuana laws in this country. I can’t believe you’re still serving a 40 year sentence for a non-violent marijuana crime,” his reassuring words conveyed.
Nonetheless, after twenty-four years and thirty eight-days in federal prison, I’m slapped with the sober reality that freedom isn’t merely given, it’s usually demanded or purchased through the cruelest form of payment. “Let freedom ring,” Martin Luther King, Jr., proclaimed, and it cost him his life; “And the truth shall set you free,” Jesus admonished, and he was crucified; “It’s an idea (democratic free society) which I hope to live for and achieve …” Nelson Mandela pleaded, costing him 27 years of freedom.
Freedom isn’t cheap. Oftentimes it’s purchased through self-sacrifice and pain.
My freedom doesn’t reach such harsh proportions, but still costs. For it relies on the financial efforts of others.
So on this Fourth of July, on independence day, I pray as you enjoy your freedom and as you remember the words of our forefathers, “that all … are endowed by their creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among them are Life, Liberty, and the pursuit of Happiness …” you think of me, and make a financial donation to set me free; to redeem me from an unjust incarceration long overdue. Thank you for your love and support.
