These are voices from the cannabis prisoners and beyond. We sometimes get so caught up in the trenches of activism that we tend to forget to let others know what the people we represent actually endure behind the fence.
This series of blogs are from cannabis prisoners, their families and Freedom Grow volunteers. We always seek to do more for individuals who’ve been left behind in “the war on drugs”, such as bringing you their ‘voices from behind bars’.
There are over 40,000 cannabis prisoners that don’t deserve to be incarcerated for a plant that’s now legal in thirty-seven states and counting.

Hello! My name is Juan Antonio Cavasos, and I welcome you into my world of art, and blogs. Currently, I am in prison for conspiracy to possess marijuana. The actual date of the apprehension began in 2008.
I am 42 years old, and a proud native of Texas. Art has been a means to place my focus on what I had once known was my passion since 6 years old. This was later recognized and influenced by my Art teacher. Setting my mind to perfect my techniques only awakened my desire to practice and achieve the use of paints. With this same tattooing as well. All were completed successfully and still learning.
What was really learned above all, was that I had the capacity to achieve whatever I set my mind to. Mostly, that one essential necessity: self-love and respect! The pay-off most valuable I have gotten is those times I see potential students actually take off on their own to create their art. Now I have set myself on learning to become more social, after 16 years of bitterness, as well as new traits that will contribute to helping society.
Edwin Rubis
Edwin has served over x24 years in Federal Prison for a non-violent Marijuana crime. He is a victim of the perpetual “war-on-drugs”. Throughout his incarceration, his family has sought numerous ways to obtain his freedom. They’ve all proven fruitless, due to a lack of funds to hire legal counsel, newspaper ads to promote public awareness, and to generate bi-partisan political support.
Edwin is a fully rehabilitated individual. While imprisoned, he has earned x3 college degrees, which include a Master’s Degree in Counseling, and he’s now working on his Doctorate [read Edwin’s story on Freedomgrow.org].

Murderers get out quicker. no joke. I personally know a few people who have committed murders and they both got less than 10 years in prison for manslaughter.. Not fair, but I sold this plant and they give me 30 years. I was only 30 years old when I got sentenced.

My name is Jonathan Wall, I am twenty-six years old and a federal prisoner incarcerated for the last thirteen months at the Chesapeake Detention Facility, a maximum security lockup located in Baltimore, Maryland that is commonly referred to as “CDX” as well as the “super-max”. Presently, I am awaiting trial in federal court and if convicted I stand to receive a prison sentence of anywhere from the mandatory minimum of ten years up to life imprisonment, all of it without any possibility of parole. What am I here for? Well I did not kill anyone or steal anything. Nobody was kidnapped, nor did I rape anybody or commit any sort of sexual assault, although somehow if I had I would be subject to significantly less prison time according to the federal sentencing guidelines. No, the alleged offense that the federal government is squandering the taxpayer’s money, your money, on housing and prosecuting me is for conspiring to distribute cannabis.

In the first decade of this new millennium, I was incarcerated for four and a half years. My crime was “maintaining a place for the manufacturing of marijuana”. This experience gave me a deeper understanding than most of the inner workings of the federal justice system. Indictment, court proceedings, prison life, halfway houses, and probation all present their own nuances and problems. Once I could put all these difficulties behind me, I felt compelled to do something for those who were less fortunate than I. When I was dealing with the courts, I learned that a life sentence could be a consequence for even marijuana offenses, and I was shocked. Even more shocking was discovering that dozens of regular, normal people had been condemned to this dark fate. Drawing from my own experiences, I knew that these people needed help in the worst way.
